Hp laserjey 6L driver

I am trying to install my old printer Laserjet 6L on my new windows 7, through a usb parallel port adapter. Windows does not install the driver when I plug in. And whenever I try to use windows update to find the driver, the update doesn't run at all. I have connected the printer this way;
add a printer--> USB001 port--> and then the list of drivers doesn't show laserjet 6L, so i run windows update but I keep getting 'windows was unable to get the list of devices.
Also in the printers and devices, the printer is detected as IEEE controller 1284 and not hp laserjet...

Please help!

have you tried Windows XP compatibility or Windows XP virtual machine?
