cure for "sick" mouse

Micro Innovations "blue wheel" mouse. MODEL M027FO ASM P/N 19K2002
cuts off randomly while browsing. Can hear clicks from CPU.
Just started this annoying behavior since I installed Win 7.
I believe it may be a driver problem. I'm a psychologist and can't seem to analyze this behavior. It's a good old mouse and I would really like to keep it around rather than "exterminate" it. Any suggestions will be given eternal gratification.
